Excerpt from a homily by Geronda Isidore the Blind (April 29, 2014)

… Geronda Isidore then took a photograph. It depicted himself with his Elder and the Angelic form of the late Elder Ephraim, the Holy Abbot of Xeropotamou.

“Children, in 1979 we were 92 monks here [i.e. Philotheou Monastery]. Our Geronda then sent Philotheos to Karakallou, Agathon to Konstamonitsou and Ephraim to Xeropotamou; who is said to have martyred… God allowed him to die very young in a martyric way; he was only 40 years old…Do you know why? Because he baptized former Muslims Orthodox Christians! Surprised we heard something we did not know… We had heard that Ephraim Xeropotaminos was killed in a car … but now the matter entered its true dimension….

I thought about how in America since the time Ephraim Philotheou went,  eight hundred thousand souls have been baptized…This is why Geronda continuously receives threats on his life and incredible calumnies. And yet he continues…

In Arizona, the Monastery of St. Anthony which the Elder established made the desert resemble the greenest fertile place in the world. It hosts permanently about 500 pilgrims arriving from everywhere, seeking to quench their souls. With plenty of water miraculously found there watering a thousand plus acres with 6000 olive trees, lemon, orange, pistachio, vines and other things previously unimaginable for the climate of the region. But, what’s impossible for men is possible for God…
